Dig out those Chewbacca costumes, grab a lightsaber and cue the Cantina Band. It’s Star Wars Day!
Fans all over the world celebrate the Star Wars franchise today with parties, viewings and organized celebrations. At various Disney Stores, fans will be in the thick of it, with in-store activities, giveaways and promotions.
This year is especially exciting as it coincides with the recent announcement of the new Star Wars Episode VII film and cast including originals Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker).
Star Wars Day has become so popular that the following day (May 5) has been referred to as Revenge of the Fifth. Fans let their evil sides come out by celebrating the villains from the Star Wars series.
How will YOU celebrate Star Wars Day?
Disney Parks Blog
Back on May 1, 1989, Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM Studios) opened at Walt Disney World in Florida.
Originally, the park only had 9 attractions – Backstage Studio Tour, Catastrophe Canyon, Disney Classics Theatre, The Great Movie Ride (I think the water is still the same as 25 years ago!), Hollywood Hollywood, Magic of Disney Animation, Monster Sound Show, Superstar Television and Residential Street.
My, how things have changed.
Now, the park has tons of rides and attractions for all to enjoy – Fantasmic, Toy Story Mania, Star Tours, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, and Rock n’ Roller Coaster, to name a few. One special treat we got to experience on our last trip was the Jedi Academy Training. Both of my kids signed up (BIG Star Wars fans) and had so much fun!! Darth is huge close up!
The one thing I definitely miss from the old MGM Studios days is Residential Street. I loved seeing the Golden Girls house, one of my favorite shows growing up. It was just such a treat to see these props as you rode by, making you feel like you were somehow part of the ‘magic’ of television.
So Happy Anniversary Hollywood Studios! Here’s to the next 25! 😉
The 2013 D23 Expo began this morning! Brought to us by none other than The Official Disney Fan Club, the Expo is taking place at the Anaheim Convention Centre all weekend long.
The event is known as ‘the ultimate Disney fan event” and here’s why – there are pavilions, panels, merchandise, character meet & greets, previews of upcoming movies & tv shows, entertainment, product previews and much, much, more. This year the Disney Legends ceremony will take place during the Expo as well.
Look for tons of Marvel this year at the Expo with all of the new Avenger movies coming out (Thor, Captain America) and the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D tv show coming this fall. And for the first time ever since Disney acquired Marvel back in 2009, there are meet and greets with some Marvel characters.
There are also rumors of a new Star Wars Land swirling about and there have been hints and teases at the Expo but nothing concrete has been announced thus far (but seriously, how cool would that be?!?!?).
Tickets for D23 Expo are $57 per adult for 1 day admission and $47 per child (3-12) for 1 day admission.
Tickets for D23 Members are $50 per adult for 1 day admission and $42 per child (3-12) for 1 day admission.
Are you a D23 Member? Are you heading to the D23 Expo this year?
Jedi Master Yoda
Searching for some Star Wars stuff for my son (who’s crazy about the franchise), I came across “Talk Like Yoda Day”, which was May 21. TALK LIKE YODA DAY!?!?! How did I miss this? My favorite character from Star Wars has his own language day and I missed it? Well, it’s not that big of a deal, but you get the point!
Talk Like Yoda Day, May 21, coincides with the anniversary of the release of Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back where we get our first view of the powerful Jedi Master. I have to say, my favorite scene with Yoda is by far him rooting through Luke’s backpack and chucking stuff out. Cinematic genius! 😉
So you want to find your inner Yoda? Here’s some tips:
1. Rearrange the order of clauses in a sentence.
2. Put “hmmmmmmm” at the end of a sentence.
3. Add “Yes” at the end of a question.
4. For sound, form your voice at the back of your throat to give it a throaty, gargling tone.
And now, some fun Yoda-sims:
“My home, this is”
“Reckless is he”
“Hear you nothing that I say”
“No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try”
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering”
Have fun, and may the force be with you! (omg so cheesy, but I had to do it!!)
