Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

This holiday, of sorts, started a few years back in 1995 when John Baur (Ol’ Chumbucket) + Mark Summers (Cap’n Slappy) proclaimed September 19 as the day when everyone should talk like a pirate. The ‘holiday’ gained some speed in 2002 when John + Mark sent a letter to Dave Barry, an American syndicated humour columnist. Barry liked the idea so much he immediately started promoting it that year and going forward.

This fun idea is now being recognized all around the world and to be honest, what a great excuse to pull out some one-liners from Captain Jack Sparrow’s repertoire without seeming strange. Okay, it may still seem strange but at least you have an excuse now!

So today, whether you’re at work, or just relaxing with friends/family, I challenge you to:
1. work ‘scurvy‘ into a sentence
2. instead of answering ‘yes’ to a question, respond with ‘aye
3. just plain greet someone with an ‘ahoy‘ rather than ‘hello’

Happy ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ to you all!! 😉
